Last time we wrote about the schedule of the Single-speed European Championships in Kobarid, Slovenia. This time on some of the participants and more.

Online registration opened two weeks ago. Some 200 people pre-registered, now about 120 confirmed their registration. There are more coming in daily.

Europe and beyond

This is the European Championships allright but there are already Americans and one Japanese registered plus the reigning singlespeed World Champion Angus Edmond of New Zealand.

Also attending will be the organizers of the past championships, Claudio Sartori and Sebastiano Fossi from Italy and the Irish team of Rick, Jonny, David and Toby. Of course there will be lots of Slovenians. Even if the number of local singlespeeders is not huge there will be some riders giving it a try for the first time.

Riding over

A participant from France will do the trip of 1200km on his singlespeed bike! He is planing to do it in five days and then of course race. Five riders decided to unpack their bikes at the Ljubljana airport and cross the mountains to Kobarid on their bikes. All that is the singlespeed culture so to say.

The rules

There is basically just one rule: you should not be able to shift gears on your bicycle. Well, it should not have a motor either. And it should be in working condition. A 26", 27.5", 29", fat or plus size... A mountain bike, event a cyclocross bike or a unicycle. We've seen all types. Safety gear? Mandatory helmet of course!

The event is managed by Dani Kovačič and Uršula Kordiš. It started as a fun idea back in April 2014. Since then they traveled to Alaska and Japan for the Singlespeed World Championships and to SSEC in Sicily and things started to roll.
